The month of May is fast approaching and it means that the celebrations of colorful festivals or fiestas are just around the corner! One of the Philippines’ most popular festivals is none other than the Pahiyas Festival!

Dubbed by many as the fiesta to end all fiestas, the Pahiyas Festival is an annual event in the humble town of Lucban, Quezon in honor of St. Isidore the Laborer (San Isidro Labrador), which is believed to be the patron saint of the farmers. Held every 15th of May, the Pahiyas festival is celebrated by artistically decorating the houses with fruits, vegetables, grains, and other colorful harvests in order to give thanks for their bountiful harvest.

Do you know where the word “Pahiyas” was coined from? It was derived from the word “hiyas” which means to decorate with agricultural harvest, thus the decorating of their houses begun. According to their belief, the households that were passed through by San Isidro during the procession would receive abundant blessings throughout the year.

Aside from fruits, vegetables and grains, another popular decoration during the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon is the “Kiping”. For those who are not aware of it, “Kiping” is actually made from ground rice flour which is made into wafer and shaped using “cabal” leaves, then colored with different bright colors. And yes, it is edible. These kipings are commonly hanged in a chandelier-like form called “Arangya”, or shaped into huge flowers, or served as wall-paper-like décor. Other decorations also include colorful native hats, placemats, anok (miniature people), and even sausages and lechon (roasted suckling pig), are decked in the most fashionable way.

On the eve of Pahiyas Festival, there are rock bands in concert and different variety shows that are held on the park near the municipal hall. There are also local shops or tiangge situated on the streets where you can shop for souvenirs, you can choose from a wide selection of snacks, native items, shoes, t-shirts, and other accessories to take home as pasalubong.

The root word of “Pahiyas” is “hiyas.” So, it was not coined from “payas.” It is a Tagalog word for “to decorate.” Before its popularity as a festival in Lucban, the Tagalogs of other towns of Quezon Province are using the word when decorating for weddings, Good Friday procession, and other occasions.
